Mt. Everest Loses Highest Glacier To Global Warming

Must read

Mt. Everest is no longer safe from global warming. The mountain range has lost a significant chunk of its majestic glaciers in recent years.

Global warming is the biggest problem at the moment. Rapid industrialization has led to many technological advancements.

However, it does come with a lot of cons. The extensive use of harmful and hazardous material plagues the environment of the Earth’s surface significantly. The reasons for global warming are numerous. One of the key contributors is fossil fuel.

Fossil fuels are nonrenewable and nonbiodegradable sources of energy. The burning of such fuels releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. These chemicals are predominantly carbon dioxide.

The carbon components mix with the air to form an impenetrable layer over the atmosphere. This layer traps the heat causing the overall temperature of the Earth to rise. This rise in the Earth’s temperature is a serious threat to mankind.

If the surface temperature of the Earth exceeds 1.5°C serious consequences will take place. Major cities might be submerged in water. Global warming is also causing the ice to melt.

A recent data has come up with some shocking revelations. Ice on Mt. Everest that took almost 2000 years to form, has melted away since the year 1990. This has raised some serious questions about which way we are heading towards.

A team of scientists recently studied Mt. Everest for monitoring the glaciers of the mountain. However, little did they know that they would be presented with a surprise.

Their study found out that ice on the mountain is melting eighty times faster than it took to accumulate. Let us learn more about the story in detail below.

Mt. Everest Is Losing Its Ice Rapidly

Mt. Everest has not been spared from the ill effects of global warming. A group of scientists went up to the glacier of South Col. They wanted to find out how much ice has been lost due to the rapidly changing climate.

The reports published on 3rd February are heartbreaking. They saw that the glaciers had melted completely. The estimated time of the formation of the ice was roughly two thousand years. Paul Mayewski is a renowned author.

He stated that the main aim of the study was to ensure whether the glaciers are affected by human activities or not. Now that the answer has been found out, he has urged society to act accordingly.

Paul also concluded that the loss of the glaciers from Mt. Everest has started predominantly from the 1990s. Such a rapid loss of glaciers poses several degrees of threat. The people living nearby should be very much careful now.

The loss of ice left other ice caps loose. This might result in unannounced avalanches anytime. The loss of ice caps will expose the treacherous bedrocks that can be a nightmare for the trekking enthusiasts.

Mt. Everest Significantly Damaged Due To Loss Of Ice

Mt. Everest has portrayed a sorry state of affairs recently. The loss of a significant amount of ice has left environmentalists speechless.

Scientists estimated that the process of thinning began in the year 1950. It initially was because of natural reasons like changes in humidity.

However, the process sped up in the 1990s when rapid industrialization took place. The glacier of South Col in Mt. Everest is now devoid of its ice shield.

The shield helped the mountain to bounce off the sunlight from its surface. However, with the protection gone, the area is bound for rapid retreat.
