The concept of agroforestry based on a pineapple is popular in Assam. It originated with the tribal people of Hmar. According to recently conducted studies, this form of farming can be a game-changer. In earlier days “Jhum” cultivation was seen as a prospective climate control measure. However, the practice could not be sustained. A reduced cycle of fallow in the northeastern regions of India contributed to its sustainability.

Pineapple Agroforestry can be the key to stem the ill effects of changing climate. The Department of Ecology & Environmental Science of Assam conducted a recent study. It was found that efficient methods of pineapple farming can also restore loss of biodiversity. With this study, a long-awaited question seems to be solved. A sustainable method of forestry offering the potential of storing carbon in a large amount was long demanded. 

Most of northeastern India along with several South Asian countries are moving to agroforestry. High-value crops are also in demand. These practices are believed to stand the test of time and are also a profitable alternative. 

Pineapple Agroforestry: A Study 

Arun Jyoti Nath was in charge of the research carried out by the University of Assam. The researchers emphasized finding an option for diverse tree plantations. They also stressed carbon storage capabilities. The reduction in the amount of atmospheric carbon will heal the climate significantly. Most of the hazards are caused mainly by toxic carbon emissions. 

The team conducted their study mainly in three areas. The district of Cachar in Assam, parts of Himalaya & Indo-Burma. This is known as a hotspot center for global biodiversity. The team closely followed the range of different trees in the area. The transition in the dominance of tree species from agricultural methods of swidden was scrutinized. They also studied the difference between carbon in biomass and the ecosystem. 

Pineapple Agroforestry

The study revealed that preference was given to the fruit trees to form the outer lining of the field. These trees provided stability to the field by reducing the erosion in soil. Trees having high monetary value were found inside the fields. Parkiatimoriana, Albiziaprocera & Aquilariamalaccensis are some examples. Apart from these, common fruits such as lemon, litchi, guava, pineapple were planted for year-long sale.

The Pineapple Agroforestry method enables the topmost canopy trees to manage to light. They also amplify the diversity of farms and biomass. As a result, the soil becomes fertile providing enhanced nutrition for the plants. Pineapple-based forestry is predominant in the Eastern parts of the Indian Himalayas.
