Tree Cover Rises Significantly In India

Must read

Tree Cover in India has been on the rise in the last couple of years. This is one of the biggest news stories that will broaden the smiles on everyone’s face.

Modernization has taken a huge toll on the environment. With the increase in the number of industries, the green cover on the Earth has started to decrease. More and more industrialization requires more factories.

To accommodate a larger number of factories, forests are being cleared mercilessly. Trees are cut down and the greener areas are replaced with concrete buildings. This hurts the planet in a great way. Trees are one of the biggest sources of oxygen.

They can also absorb a huge amount of carbon dioxide. Lack of trees results in the carbons to remain suspended in the air. These harmful gases mix in the atmosphere and form an impenetrable layer above.

The layer traps heat and does not allow smooth ventilation. As a result, the surface temperature of the Earth rises. This can have catastrophic effects on the planet. Polar ice caps are on the verge of melting completely.

This will result in massive floods that can submerge modern cities. Cities like Venice are in grave danger as the water level has kept rising there. The rise in Earth’s surface temperature will also make the environment hostile for living.

Thus, growing more trees can be an effective solution to counter all these problems. India seems to have done just that. According to the latest data, the forest cover in India has grown by 1540 sq km in the last couple of years.

The tree cover also rose by 721 sq km. The overall tree cover has gone up to 80.9 million hectares. This figure is very much impressive as it makes up 24.62 percent of the geographical area in India.

Tree Cover In India Goes Greener In Last Two Years

India has been working significantly to promote the mission green globe. Several measures have been taken to plant trees and restore the rapidly depleting tree cover. All these efforts have been successful to a large extent.

According to recently published data, the green cover in the country has risen by 2261 sq km. The India State Of Forest Report came up with the figures for the year 2021.

The report was unveiled by Bhupender Yadav, who is the Union Environmental Minister of India. He expressed his happiness while disclosing the numbers. Yadav stated that it was a proud moment for the nation. Compared to 2019, the numbers have grown impressively.

The minister further stated that India is now ready to take things to the next level. They will be entering the second phase of the Green Mission soon. India aims at maximizing the carbon sink to 3billion by 2030.

To achieve the milestone, Nagar Van Yojna has been unveiled by the minister. Yadav is highly expectant of achieving the milestone within the upcoming five years.

Andhra Pradesh Leads Tree Cover Of India

Andhra Pradesh has been the frontrunner when it comes to increasing tree cover. The state recorded a density of ten percent increase in the tree canopy.

Andhra Pradesh has over 647sq km of forest land. Telangana has claimed the second spot with 632sq km. Odisha(537 sq km), Karnataka(155 sq km) and Jharkhand (110 sq km) have also shown a commendable increase in the green cover.

Unfortunately, the states in the northeast have not performed well. They have recorded a decrease in the number of trees planted in the last couple of years.

The Indian government aims to take up several tree plantation programs to further add to the tree cover of the country.
